Jasvinder Sanghera CBE
Agent: Mark Lucas
Jasvinder Sanghera acts as a consultant and expert witness in cases of forced marriage and honour-based crime and works closely with government, statutory and voluntary sector agencies. Her work has led to the Forced Marriage Act being brought to the House of Lords. She founded Karma Nirvana in 1994 to give help and refuge to Asian victims of abuse.
She is the recipient of the Asian Woman of Achievement Award, the Pride of Britain Award, the GG2 Leadership and Diversity Award, the Ambassador for Peace Award, Marie Claire’s Hero of the Month Award, The Times/NatWest Community Enterprise Award for her outstanding commitment to disadvantaged communities, and has been the Guardian’s Inspirational Woman of the Year.
Born in Derby, her extraordinary odyssey began at the age of 14, when she was shown a photograph of the man chosen to be her husband. She ran away from home and her parents disowned her. Shame, the harrowing but electrifying story of her struggle against their punitive code of ‘honour’, and her determination to keep alive the dreams that she and her much loved sister (who committed suicide) yearned to realise, was an immediate bestseller. It, and her subsequent books, have shone a spotlight on one of the burning issues of our age.
