Howard Reid is an Emmy Award-winning film maker and writer. After leaving Cambridge in 1973, he spent three years with the Maku, a group of nomadic hunter-gatherers in the Brazilian Amazon, the subject of his PhD thesis. His BBC documentaries include Worlds Apart (1981), The Way of the Warrior (1983), The Story of English (1986), Only One Earth (1986), Red Dynasty (1989) and Under the Sun (1989-91).
His books include the international bestselling The Way of the Warrior, a study of the Martial Arts of the Far East; In Search of the Immortals: Mummies, Death and the Afterlife, The Rise and Fall of Alexandria: Birthplace of the Modern World and Arthur, the Dragon King, the first in-depth study of the ancient mounted nomads of Central Asia, and the roles they may have played in shaping Medieval Europe and the Arthurian legends. Dad’s War (Transworld Publishers, 2010) is a touching personal memoir retracing his father’s experiences as an escaped prisoner of war in Italy in 1943-4.
