David Gritten is a journalist who specialises in writing about film and popular music. After six years on daily newspapers in his native Birmingham and in London, he moved to Los Angeles. During a 10-year stint in Hollywood, he became a regular interviewer for People magazine before joining the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, initially as TV critic and then as its arts section editor. Returning to London, he spent the next two decades on contract for the Los Angeles Times and also the Daily Telegraph -- he wrote frequent profiles for its colour magazine, and arts-related profiles and film criticism for the paper itself.
He has hosted dozens of live Q&A sessions with leading film-makers and actors, many of them for BAFTA and for members of American Academy in London. His book Fame: Stripping Celebrity Bare (2002) was the first to analyse the impact of reality TV on celebrity culture. He edited the two final editions of Halliwell’s Film Guide and is a former chairman of the London Film Critics’ Circle. In 2018, he completed Aardman: An Epic Journey, the story of the legendary British animation company.
