In 1995, while working for the HALO trust, Chris Moon was blown up in the safety lane of a Mozambique minefield. He lost his lower right arm and leg, and yet less than a year after leaving hospital he completed the London Marathon, and became the first leg amputee to complete the 254km, 6 day Marathon des Sables. He was awarded the MBE in 1996, and ran the final stage of the Olympic torch relay to Nagano for the 18th Winter Olympics. He is the author of an inspirational memoir, One Step Beyond.
