YouTuber; television, radio and children's broadcaster; science, tech and environment
Maddie Moate is a YouTube filmmaker and BBC radio and television presenter, passionate about curiosity and enthusing young people in STEM subjects.
Maddie began her career in technology, presenting LadyGeek TV, a hit comedy web series about apps and online security aimed specifically at women. From here she was approached by O2 to host O2 Guru TV and then by Channel 4 for whom she created the online Home of the Future content. Maddie now regularly works with various technology giants, including Dixons Carphone Samsung and Intel.
YouTube is at the heart of Maddie's online presence. She has her own highly successful personal channel and her films more generally have amassed in excess of some 18 million views. As one of the UK's only female "Edu-Tubers", she aims to create content which blends traditional YouTube style with a more serious educational focus. The success of her YouTube presence and interest in (and knowledge of) wildlife has led her to present Earth Unplugged, BBC Earth's YouTube channel, from 2012 onwards. This fantastic channel has over 460,000 subscribers and has seen Maddie covered in leeches, swimming with prehistoric fish and hatching alligators as she travels across the world. The series won a well-deserved Panda award from Wildscreen in 2014 for best New Media and grabbed the attention of BBC America, who turned the best bits into the one-off television special, 'It's a Mad Mad Maddie World.'
Maddie is also a much-loved face on BBC children's television, where she has presented the hit Cbeebies programme 'Do You Know?' since 2016. In this series, which has already been recommissioned, Maddie explores how everyday objects work, bringing educational content to younger viewers in a fun, engaging format.
Aside from digital content and television, Maddie also brings science to the stage, in shows she writes, produces and hosts herself. She is also a patron of the Youth STEM Awards (YSA) scheme and an ambassador for Eureka: The National Children's Museum.
What the audience can expect
Maddie is a fun, engagingly warm presence, able to communicate complex topics with clarity and always aiming to inspire her audience. Her extensive broadcast and stage experience has honed her skills as a speaker, and she is as comfortable and effective in front of a younger audience as she is in front of an adult one - a truly rare feat.
